How To Use LinkedIn Nearby For Your Next Business Networking Event!

Who hates collecting business cards….then having to input them into your phone, into your CRM, and then email them…and then find them on LinkedIn?

Did you know you can connect with EVERYONE at the event all at once! LinkedIn created a feature called “Find Nearby” which allows everyone else with that feature activated to easily connect with one click!

This benefits your event in 2 major ways.

  1. It allows everyone to connect without having to pass out business cards keeping it digital and making your event appear tech savvy.
  2. If it is a larger event they may not be able to talk to everyone, so this gives them the opportunity to talk to everyone.
  3. After the event, they can contact each other and build their relationships! (Keep in mind that events that give them positive results will be an event they will invest more time/money into and talk about)

LinkedIn is the social media platform for professional businesses and people looking to connect in a relevant and productive way. In order to differentiate themselves and provide more value, they developed the “Find Nearby” feature to allow members to quickly find and connect with each other based on physical location utilizing your mobile device.

The Find Nearby LinkedIn feature was developed to help you connect with people who are within your proximity. This is the most efficient way to network. Anyone in Bluetooth range and that has the feature activated will show up and you can easily click “connect”, continue with the in-person networking and build your relationship later when it’s more mutually convenient.

Events that it works best for are

  1. Conferences
  2. Seminars
  3. Networking Groups
  4. Expos
  5. Business Retreats
  6. Vendor Sponsored Lunches
  7. Luncheons
  8. Referral Groups
  9. Chamber Events
  10.  Business to Business Meetups

How To Enable “Find Nearby” on your Mobile Device?

Open the LinkedIn app on your mobile device, tap the “My Network” and then tap the “Find nearby” at the bottom of your home screen.

LinkedIn doesn’t track, monitor, or store your precise location data. To keep it working, you’ll need to activate your mobile’s Bluetooth to see who is nearby.

*Important note: The “Find Nearby” will only discover LinkedIn profiles who are about 100 feet or so around you. Plus, their LinkedIn’s Find Nearby function should be discoverable too. If this works, you can send a message or invite them to connect. It’s networking time!

Do you think it’s that easy to connect with people even though you already enabled your “Find Nearby” settings? The answer is Yes, only if you cover all the bases and make your profile stand out, and highlighted your strongest asset.

What Are The Things You Can Do To Make a Memorable LinkedIn Profile?

Here are some tips:

  1. Complete Your LinkedIn Profile

Your LinkedIn profile is an important part of your brand. That’s why it is essential that you spend time and energy to make your profile complete, authentic, and compelling. Aside from making your profile stand out, LinkedIn search algorithm seeks and displays results in this order:

  • Profile Completeness
  • Common Connections
  • Connections by Degree (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
  • Common Groups

The main reason for completing your LinkedIn profile is to ensure that you appear in LinkedIn search results.

  1. Select A Professional Or Creative Headshot For Your Profile Photo

To upgrade your LinkedIn profile is to add a good headshot. Remember that this is the first impression people will get from your page. So look professional or creative, depending on the brand you want to show the people.

Make sure to add a photo of you because if you don’t have a photo, it would be difficult for you to network on LinkedIn. Some LinkedIn members would think, “What’s she/he hiding?”

       3. Create An Impressive LinkedIn Headline

You have 120 characters to work with your LinkedIn Headline. Think of it as a small billboard advertisement. Instead of just listing your job title, mention your specialization and highlight your work.. If you’re looking for a job, write a brief headline on how employers will benefit from your skills.

      4.  Highlight Your Experience

The Summary section of your LinkedIn profile is a great way to highlight your experience. Think of LinkedIn as a cover letter, resume, and portfolio all in one. Make your profile as complete as possible by using all the segments to your advantage.

       5. Set Up Or Join LinkedIn Groups

All LinkedIn users can set up or join groups to exchange ideas and share your industry’s news. Interacting with the LinkedIn Community of your choice is a great way to develop your professional network.

To search for groups, go to “My Network” and select Groups to Create or Search for interesting groups to join, or visit the status of the groups you requested to join with.

Once you’re a group member, you’re able to join group conversations, ask questions, and send messages to other members.

      6. Keep Your Account Active

Here are some of the reasons why you should keep your LinkedIn account active:

  • Keeping your LinkedIn Account current keeps you up-to-date with Industry News.
  • It can help your brand with Google rankings.
  • 94% of recruiters use LinkedIn as their main source to seek out new talent.
  • An active LinkedIn account helps build your brand or business.

Now that you have an idea on how you can make your profile stand out, it’s time for you to create, update, and complete your LinkedIn profile. Once you’re all set up, go to “My Network” and enable your “Find Nearby” so you can discover the LinkedIn users within your reach, start to connect, and network.

Lastly, to prevent other members from discovering you, switch the Find Nearby feature off and turn off your Bluetooth if you are not using it.
